About

Artist Statement

I am a contemporary artist whose ideas arise
conceptually from social memory.  My visual practice teases out connections to cultural shifts, historical interpretations, environmental issues, popular culture, social paradigms, disappearing practices & generational
connections through a contemporary lens.

The primary focus of my concepts revolves around using
memory to create experiences.  Frequently recontextualizing objects, I utilize my experience with an assortment of mediums, allowing me to create works that facilitate experiential nostalgia and individual interpretations. Engineering expertise allows me to achieve durable lasting works in the public sector.
Frequently maquettes for public and commission works can be seen or purchased in my gallery.

Exploration of multimedia social engagement projects
is a current focus as well as escalating the scope of those projects to the monumental and public scale. The Art In The Everyday Community Quilt Project has grown to 55 feet and returned home after a stint at the Maryland Institute of Art after an installation in the front of Laura’s studio in the gallery for the exhibition The Everyday and Everyday Objects Recontextualized. Underway is a new project American Fabric reflecting social engagement through the lives and family of immigrants. The project will grow to a monumental social sculpture as well.

I continue to be intrigued with ways to incorporate
my connection to the west and explore agriculture and nature as western artist. I now and am always exploring the question of what contemporary western art is. Often I reference the environment or impermanence thru my practice and installations often utilizing or exploring ephemeral, experiential and multimedia approaches. I have received recognition for interpreting ideas into larger than life public works, art in public spaces, active staircases and large format gallery installations.

Known as a metal caster and sculptor utilizing many mediums. I have additionally utilized photography in large format. I have developed work that includes: photographic transfers onto permanent materials including ceramic tile, light up LED images, billboard size images as murals or large advertising prints. This skill frequently combines with electronic and light-based works as well as works with sculptural components that can be seen in many formats from multistory to installation scale. Whether monumental, installation, 2-d, billboard scale, monumental linear or grid format, I fabricate work in a wide range of materials that include steel, bronze, iron, wood, real life objects, digital components, photography and light components.

Civil Engineering is an integral part of my foundational ideas as well as logistical or transportation hurdles and project management.

Client projects that incorporated community input
include: Metro West Housing Solutions and The University of Hawaii, Volcano Art Center.

A smattering of projects that met the sense of place and unique dimensions include: The University of Northern Colorado, City Hall – Artopia and GDVN conference, Republic Plaza 5 temporary public projects, Lakewood Cultural Center western themed A Space in Time, Confucius Institute sculptural Red Doors. Mural projects include the Confucius Institute, Kings Rest, Crushwalls and multiple Private projects.

My largest photographic project is a single
image over 35 ft long. Entertain is 19 x 18 x 20 ft. For Vancouver Biennial inclusion a crop art environmental art project 150 x 30 ft. was created. Social Engagement public projects include 1100 Pieces and currently
The Art in the Everyday Community Quilt Project. Multistory and light-based public works Metro West Housing and Artopia.

I have a body of work intended for municipal art on loan programs, I have had over 16 solo exhibitions, my
work has been exhibited Nationally and Internationally. Recently I was invited as a participant at The Future of Public Art conference hosted by WESAF and finished a post graduate course work at Otis College for Emerging Curators in which cultural diversity was a focus. An Artnauts since 2019 allows me to exhibiting internally with with the amazingly talented group of artists founder of the Artnauts Dr. Rivera leads.
